"Dewey Readmore Books is
the resident cat at Spencer Public Library. He was put in the book return one
cold January night in 1988. When the staff found him the next morning, they
decided to adopt him. After the library's board of trustees and the city council
approved, the kitten was declawed, neutered, and given the proper vaccinations.
A contest was held to pick a name, and Dewey Readmore Books was officially added
to the staff. Dewey is actually pretty healthy. He will be 15 in November, 2002.
He still plays, jumps upon counters, and loves a good lap." Dewey has a
website (you can find a link to it here) that has
his job description and basic rules for cats who have to run libraries. He is
quite famous and has been in Cat Fancy magazine and in the video about library
cats called Puss In Books. Story and pictures sent in by Vicki Myron, the director
of Spencer Public Library in Spencer, Iowa.
